How I Passed the Marketing Cloud Email Specialist Exam!

As you understood from the title, I passed my Marketing Cloud Email Specialist exam!

It was the 1st of the 5 Salesforce exams I passed on the same day, but I will be covering each one in a different blog post.

I personally found this to be quite a difficult exam. Not just because I’m not a Marketer (and therefore some of the terms were new to me), but mainly because there is so much ExactTarget Documentation to go through.

I hadn’t come across this whilst I was preparing for this exam, but since then, there are two guides that I would particularly recommend that can really help you get started:

  1. The Study Notes created by Ben Edwards
  2. This Succeed with Salesforce Blog post written by Mayank Srivastava

My tactic was to go through all the material that I could find on the ExactTarget Documentation site, based on what was required for the Study Guide. This is a certification where experience using ExactTarget would really benefit you, but if you don’t have any, you can still do it. Also, the official Salesforce Email Essentials course or the Premium Training videos are another great way of learning the material and preparing for the exam.

Remember, this is not an exam on every piece of Salesforce Marketing Cloud functionality (although a new certification for this might be created one day – Marketing Cloud Consultant?), but this is specifically focused on ExactTarget email functionality. So it’s not about Journey Builder or Predictive Intelligence. The ExactTarget Documentation does have a lot of information on all pieces of Marketing Cloud, but be focused and stick to ExactTarget Email Marketing functionality.

I’m really happy I passed this one, as it was the one I was least confident about. As always, should you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me on Twitter

    • thanks Ben! The next one will be up at 1pm and i will cover the rest in the beginning of next week.
You do a great job of covering the other certifications, so this is more about documenting my journey and potentially helping people along the way.

  1. Hi, congrats on your certification. I’m a newbie with Salesforce and I was wondering if you could post a few of the questions you faced during this exam. It’d be greatly appreciated

    • Hi Johan,

Posting the questions is against the test taker agreement that we all sign up to at the beginning of the exam and devalues the certification. I therefore cannot post any questions. The areas that you should learn though are covered in the post I wrote.

  2. Thanks Hamza,

I noticed the study notes by Ben Edwards were written in 2015 and from my understanding the Email Specialist Certification needs to be taken annually. So my question is, are these notes good for 2015, 2016, 2017, or all of the above?

    • If you use the current notes to study for the exam and pass it, then you will be responsible for staying up to date with any new releases on Marketing Cloud for the release exams you have to do. Ben Edwards may or may not update the study notes to keep it relevant for each release, you’d have to ask him directly.

  4. Hi Hamza,

I am a certified Adobe Email marketing architect , I am targeting email marketing specialist for Salesforce.

Will my domain expertise be sufficient ?

    • Hi Aditya,

Your domain expertise will help with the principles, but you will still need to learn about how the tool implements and uses those principles. There’s a lot of questions that are specific on Marketing Cloud as a product and it’s features/functionality, so you would need to brush up on those.

Good luck for when you take the exam!
