The Importance of Professional Qualifications

If like me, you never went to university, you most likely appreciate professional qualifications more than the average person.

I don’t have a degree. And for a long time that didn’t matter to me. I’ve been lucky enough to go through my working life on my experiences alone. And now that we’re in the Salesforce world, I see a lot of people who are attaining the Salesforce certifications and in one way, it motivates me. We like to identify with others so that we feel that we too can do what they have done. So, I go online, connect with lots of people on the Salesforce Success community, on Twitter, LinkedIn, and other platforms and I’m pumped up. So many people before me have attained these certifications, so that means I can too!

But I also see the other side. I look through their profiles and background. They’ve all done one degree or another. Especially those who have attained the Advanced Developer/Platform Developer certifications, they’ve done Computer Science or another tech related degree. They’ve had years of experience on another programming language, making it easier for them to switch over. I don’t have any of that, so naturally I begin to think: Perhaps I can’t do this after all because I don’t know how to code, or it will take me many years before I get to their level.

It’s not too late for me to get a degree, but going back to studying isn’t an option for me. So the only alternative: professional qualifications, or in this case, Salesforce certifications. I feel that I can do this, it won’t be easy, but I will make sure that I do whatever it takes to fill that (academic) gap and get a sense of achievement from attaining further professional qualifications.

I haven’t come across many Salesforce certified professionals who have a similar background to myself (if you’re out there, please give me a shout on Twitter!) so as I’m going on this journey, I hope I leave a trail of breadcrumbs for others to follow.

With that said….look out for my next station stop…Destination: Architect.
